Participating institutions:
- Center for School Quality and Teacher Education (Zentrum fuer Schulqualitaet und Lehrerbildung, ZSL) – Unit 43, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany
- Savo Vocational College, Kuopio, Finland
Within the framework of the project, two visits to the project partner by each delegation have been conducted.
Project Goals
- Shadowing exemplary lessons focusing on the "use of digital devices".
- Exchange with colleagues on the opportunities and limits of digital devices in the classroom.
- Consideration of the different framework conditions.
- Exchange on the necessary and even desirable conditions for successful teaching with a focus on "BYOD".
Framework conditions
School system
The Finnish vocational school system is modular. Students attend a module if they are able to do so from a company perspective, or if
the content is suitable for the current training phase. There is therefore no fixed group of students that regularly attend classes
together.
At Baden-Wuerttemberg’s vocational schools, students attend lessons every week for one and a half days and they work for three and a half days at the training company. Some of the classes are taught in blocks (weekly alternation between school and company).
In both countries, class size varies between 10 and 30 students, depending on the module and/or occupation.
Use of digital devices
Bring your own device (BYOD): Students use digital end devices of their training company. Classes are designed in a way that these can be used regardless of platform and operating system. Digital documents are made accessible, for example, via QR codes or previously introduced platforms that are independent of operating systems.
